Review: Sennheiser Momentum 2 Over-Ear Headphones

Sennheiser's Momentum 2 headphones are the best wired headphones you can buy.

Sennheiser made a splash with their first Momentum headphones released in 2014. They earned a lot of praise, but were criticized for their lack of bass and uncomfortable pads. Sennheiser has not only corrected these issues with the Momentum 2 over-the-ear headphones, but they have made the best pair of over-the-ear headphones available today.

First, let’s talk about comfort. Not only are the earcups very soft, but they also fold for portability — although if you are looking solely for portability, you’ll be disappointed with the Sennheiser Momentum 2 headphones. However, if you are looking for fantastic sounding headphones that you can wear for extended periods of time, you found your match. These headphones are worth EVERY cent of the $350 they sell for.

The Momentum 2 headphones are very comfortable to wear for extended time periods.

In terms of sound quality, the best part about the new Momentum’s is the bass — it has more of a kick to it than the first generation, but it feels like a “friendly” kick rather the overpowering kick that Beats cans produce. Of course, if you like the harsh kick, that’s fine. But many headphones that kick your eardrums don’t produce middle and higher range sounds well. While the higher ranges in the Momentum 2′s are sort of “clipped off” at points, they still sound great. The middle rangers are also very good.

The Sennheiser Momentum 2 headphones sound good with a variety of musical genres. You get your thumping EDM beats with Avicii, but you can also hear Amy Winehouse’s voice clearly when listening to her jazz-pop music. Listening to music from James Taylor and Norah Jones also produced an immersive experience.

Some people may get angry at the fact that these $350 headphones don’t offer active noise isolation. However, that’s not always a bad thing, especially since the passive noise cancellation provided by the earpads is more than good enough. Active noise cancellation on many headphones actually degrades the sound quality. This certainly isn’t the case with most Bose headsets, but they are experts on the technology, where other companies are trying to catch up.

The Sennheiser Momentum 2 over-the-ear headphones are audiophile quality headphones that will even satisfy those who analyze every instrument. You can purchase them at If you want to see them in person, they are also sold at Fry’s Electronics. They may cost a lot of money, but your ears will thank you.
